Training

Over recent years the hospitality industry has increased the training needs required for purchasers of a business to be able to run the business personally. There is a basic requirement for a prospective candidate to have the National Licensees Certificate for Personal license holders (NLCPLH) and a Personal Licence (PL), without this you will not be awarded Designated Premises Supervisor (DPS). People entering into the trade for the first time will find training invaluable and should consider all opportunities.

The NLCPLH and PL confirms  the applicant has an understanding of current licensing law. NLCPLH Courses are widely available and do not cost a huge amount.

Privately run courses generally last for one day. If you are purchasing a lease from a Company, the company may insist that you are enrolled and attend an in-house course.

Basic training courses for candidates generally provide brief instruction on a wide range of topics including:- Business Planning, Employment Law, Catering, Marketing, Customer Service, Cellar Management, Health and Safety, Finance, Food Hygiene, Licensing Law, Dealing with Drugs and Violence, etc.

Check before you join any training courses that they are not already offered through your brewer or pub company. As already stated these may be compulsory in order for you to attain your lease.

Basic and advanced food hygiene courses are essential if you are planning to offer food.
